111 Dead from Explosion
March 25, 1947

On this day in 1947, Centralia was witness to a terrible mining disaster. A blown “shot” ignited coal dust and the resulting explosion killed 111 miners.

Safety reports had noted problems in the mines that were potentially hazardous, but production wasn’t halted.
