Henderson Sage was a traveling showman who brought his “Magic Lantern Exhibition” to Gate City, in November 1884. A “magic lantern,” was a name for a primitive slide projector.
Sage checked in to the Neeley Hotel. It was a typical Thanksgiving, or so everyone thought. The next morning, however, the proprietor had been murdered. Sage confessed to killing Neeley, but claimed it was self-defense.
