Mead was a mountain desperado who robbed and murdered J. Parker, of Scott County, Virginia. He murdered the deputy sheriff who went to arrest him, as well.

Mead had amassed a $900 reward on his head. He fled to the mountains of Kentucky after his crimes. He must’ve been followed. He was found on Rose Creek, in Estill County, by his brother-in-law Isaac James.

Mead was shot, execution style, and had been there for 2 weeks. He was identified by 2 leather bands he always wore.
